Inside the World of Australian South Sea Pearls: My Journey with Autore Pearls from Sydney to Broome

If you’ve ever wondered how Australian South Sea pearls are grown or what happens before they become exquisite jewelry, my recent journey with Autore Pearls offered an unforgettable behind-the-scenes look into one of Australia’s most fascinating luxury industries.

From witnessing the design and craftsmanship at Autore’s Sydney headquarters to visiting a working pearl farm in Broome, this trip revealed the remarkable story behind every South Sea pearl.

About Autore Pearls

Autore Pearls is one of Australia’s leading South Sea pearl companies, internationally recognised for producing exceptional Australian South Sea pearls and transforming them into contemporary fine jewelry.

Autore was established in 1991 by Rosario Autore in Sydney, Australia. His vision was to connect Australia’s finest South Sea pearl farms directly with the world’s leading jewelry houses and wholesale buyers. At the time, the business represented just one Australian pearl producer. One of Rosario Autore’s biggest contributions to the industry was developing one of the first comprehensive grading and valuation systems for South Sea pearls. By introducing consistent standards for evaluating lustre, shape, colour, surface quality and size, Autore helped establish greater confidence and transparency within the international pearl market.

From Broker to Pearl Producer

Over the following decades, the company expanded far beyond wholesale distribution. Today, Autore is a vertically integrated business, meaning it controls almost every stage of production:

  • Pearl farming

  • Culturing and harvesting

  • Grading and valuation

  • Strand matching

  • Jewelry design

  • Manufacturing

  • International distribution and marketing

This is one of the reasons quality can be maintained from the oyster to the finished piece of jewelry.

The Farms

Autore now owns and operates 10 South Sea pearl farm sites across Australia and Indonesia, harvesting more than 350,000 South Sea pearls each year. The Australian farms are located in the pristine waters off Broome and the country’s northern coastline, while additional farms operate in Indonesia.

Jewellery Design

Although Autore had been supplying pearls to the world’s finest jewelers for years, the company established its specialist jewelry design division in 2001 to create its own collections. Under the creative direction of Jane Autore, the brand has become known for contemporary designs that showcase the beauty of South Sea pearls rather than relying on traditional styling.

International Recognition

Today, Autore jewelry is sold across the United States, Europe, the Middle East and Asia. The company has won 11 international jewelry design awards, and its creations have been worn by celebrities including Angelina Jolie, Halle Berry and Scarlett Johansson, as well as appearing in productions such as Queen Charlotte: A Bridgerton Story. Autore creates elegant pearl jewelry that showcases some of the world’s finest pearls while remaining deeply connected to Australia’s pearling heritage. All three Autore children have joined the business, giving it a beautiful family feeling, all through to be honest, I met employees who have been with Autore for over 30 years, and whole company feels like one big family!

Behind the Scenes at Autore’s Sydney Headquarters

Our journey began at Autore Pearls’ headquarters in Sydney, where I was fortunate to see the entire journey from loose pearl to finished jewelry.

One of the most fascinating experiences was watching the pearl grading process. Every Australian South Sea pearl is individually assessed for its lustre, size, shape, colour, and surface quality before being matched with others of similar characteristics. Seeing thousands of pearls sorted with such precision was extraordinary and highlighted just how rare perfectly matched strands truly are.

I also watched the delicate pearl drilling process, where remarkable accuracy is required to prepare each pearl for setting. It was equally inspiring to observe the jewelry design team creating sophisticated pieces that celebrate the natural beauty of each pearl.

Walking through the showroom, surrounded by beautifully finished South Sea pearl jewelry, it became clear why Australian pearls are so highly prized around the world.

Visiting an Australian Pearl Farm in Broome

The next stage of our journey took us to Broome, Western Australia, home to one of the world’s most celebrated pearling regions. Here, we visited an Autore Pearls pearl farm to experience firsthand how cultured South Sea pearls are produced.

One of the biggest surprises was learning that much of the pearl farming process happens aboard specialised boats anchored offshore. Skilled technicians carefully culture the oysters by inserting a nucleus and mantle tissue before returning them to the pristine waters of the Indian Ocean, where nature takes over.

Over the following years, the oysters are meticulously cared for as they slowly form the beautiful Australian South Sea pearls that are admired across the globe.

Eventually, the pearls are harvested and carefully sorted before beginning their journey to become exceptional jewelry.

Watching this process unfold gave me a completely new appreciation for pearl farming in Australia. Every pearl represents years of patience, expertise, and an extraordinary partnership between nature and skilled artisans.

Discovering Broome’s Pearling History

No visit to Broome would be complete without exploring the Pearl Museum.

The museum tells the fascinating story of Western Australia’s pearling industry, from the early days of pearl diving to today’s sophisticated cultured pearl farms. It provides valuable insight into how Broome became synonymous with some of the world’s finest South Sea pearls.

Learning about the industry’s history made visiting a modern pearl farm even more meaningful, connecting centuries of tradition with today’s innovative cultivation techniques.

A Broome Sunset to Remember

As our journey came to an end, Broome delivered one final unforgettable experience.

We watched the sun set over the Indian Ocean, painting the sky in spectacular shades of gold, orange, and pink. Soon afterwards, a brilliant full moon rose above the horizon, creating one of the most breathtaking evenings imaginable.

It was the perfect conclusion to a journey that celebrated both the beauty of nature and the remarkable craftsmanship behind Australian South Sea pearls.

Why Australian South Sea Pearls Are So Special

Before this trip, I admired South Sea pearls for their beauty. After visiting Autore Pearls in Sydney and experiencing a working pearl farm in Broome, I gained a much deeper appreciation for everything they represent.

Every pearl is the result of years of careful cultivation, expert craftsmanship, and nature working in perfect harmony. From grading and design to culturing and harvesting, every stage requires extraordinary precision and patience.

The next time I see a strand of Australian South Sea pearls or a beautifully designed pearl ring, I’ll remember the dedicated people, the pristine waters of Broome, and the incredible journey each pearl has taken before finding its place in a piece of fine jewelry.

Some gemstones are mined. Pearls are grown—and that makes their story unlike any other.
